What Makes a Great Sensory Room?

Looking for a multi-sensory environment where your child or the person you care for can destress, relax and feel calm? Based in Knottingley, we’re here to support families with two wonderful safe spaces designed for sensory play.

Known as ‘Galactic Ultraviolet’ and ‘Luna Interactive’, these state-of-the-art rooms mean leisure activities for disabled children and adults are never more than a booking away. Discover what makes a great sensory room below.

A Relaxing (Judgement-free) Space

Being diagnosed with conditions such as Autism, Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD and GDD can cause people to feel different. School, appointments with specialists and general interaction with the world can also be overwhelming for those with special educational needs or disabilities.

However, our enchanting sensory rooms offer people of all ages the opportunity to unwind. Explore the hand-picked sensory equipment without fear of judgement. We’re here to support each visitor (as well as their carers).

Everyone can be their wonderful self in our inclusive space.

Somewhere that Stimulates the Senses

Snoezelen is a concept developed by two Dutch therapists during the twentieth century. Blending two words ‘snuffelen’ (to explore) and ‘doezelen’ (to relax), this soothing therapy encourages sensory integration. Both of our sensory rooms have adopted this forward-thinking principle.

Step inside and you’ll discover:

  • Tactile surfaces (touch)
  • Things to watch and see (sight)
  • A range of different noises (sound).

We encourage kinaesthetic awareness by helping our visitors interact with multicoloured bubble tubes, floor-to-ceiling fibreoptic lights and comfy cushioned platforms. Choose quiet and relaxing or loud and energetic. We’ll personalise the room to meet their needs.

It Empowers the Main Service User and their Family

A successful sensory room doesn’t just look amazing. It empowers visitors with its interactive learning aids.

Enjoy seeing your loved one create fun changes to the room - including colour-changing wall panels that respond to touch. Build their motor skills by stacking, moving, dancing around and picking up our bright sensory equipment. Click here to see photos of our spaces.

Not only will visiting our sensory rooms help to raise their confidence as they interact with ever-changing spaces, but you and your family will also leave with happy memories. Spend time practising verbal and non-verbal communication skills as a group (up to five people).

Sensory spaces provide an informal bonding experience for:

  • Carers and those with SEND
  • Families who often struggle to find inclusive activities
  • Mothers with babies or under-5s.

Whilst our duo of sensory spaces are available to the entire community, supporting those with disabilities will always remain at the heart of Sensory Planet.
